STEP 1) Firewall Introduction:

Why do I need a Firewall and how do I set it up? (Hot Issue!) (Windows Vista, 2000, 2003 and XP)

A firewall is essential to ensure good security. It prevents other computers on the network (e.g. the
Internet) from connecting to your PC or Server. Many viruses spread by using various weaknesses or
misconfigurations in the Windows Operating System – these viruses, known as WORMS, can infect your
computer as soon as you turn it on and connect to the Internet!

Care is required when using a Firewall. If it is incorrectly configured, you may have problems with:

Playing network games with other users on the Internet or on a home network
Your Web or FTP Site running on your computer
Sharing files

STEP 2) Configuring your Firewall:

To ensure that everything works correctly, TRVProtect is initially installed with the Firewall DEACTIVATED.
The TRVProtect Firewall works on the same principles as the majority of other commercially available Firewall
systems.

To activate your Firewall according to TRV Security's recommendations, simply follow the steps below:

Right click on the blue icon and select OfficeScan Main
Select the Enterprise Client Firewall tab and you will see a screen similar to that below:

Select the Enable Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and hit the Apply box

The IDS system protects your computer by blocking connections from infected computers on the Internet
and other networks .

Double click on the «All Access Policy» and you will see a screen as follows:

Move the slider to Medium and hit the Apply box. You will then see the following:

With this setting, your TRVProtect service will block all other computers from connecting to your computer.
This will provide excellent protection for your computer in the majority of cases.

If you need to allow other computers on the network to connect to your PC (e.g. if you have a Web Site,
to allow network games, etc.), then you must create appropriate Firewall exceptions to let this traffic
through the Firewall. The following points explain how to do this

STEP 3) Configuration: Create Firewall Exceptions (Advanced Users)

We will consider the example of creating a Firewall Exception to allow a Web Site running on your PC / Server to be accessible by Internet users.

To create a Firewall Exception, you will need to know the following information:

- The Port(s) and protocol(s) used by the service (Port 80, Protocol TCP are required for a Web Site)
- The Source IP addresses of users that you wish to allow access (for a Web site, you would normally
open this to ALL Internet users)

To create the Firewall Exception for the above example, click Add in the Exception Rule List
screen to see the following:

For the Web Site example, you should fill up the screen to obtain the following result:

Click Save and confirm the change to obtain the following screen:

Your Firewall Rule is now applied and computers on the Internet will be able to access your Web Site.
Click Apply and confirm your rule addition to finish

For network games and other applications that require specific Firewall Exceptions, you should consult the product documentation to find out what Ports and Protocols are required for the Exception.

Advanced users can use the Firewall logs to determine what Ports and Protocols are required if no product documentation is available

If you have problems such that the Firewall prevents the correct functioning of games and similar
applications, you can temporarily turn off the Firewall when using these applications.

You can turn off the Firewall by: Right clicking on the blue icon Selecting Disable Firewall

TRV Security Recommendation:

Remember to turn the Firewall on again when you have finished! While the Firewall is deactivated, your
computer is not protected from malicious network connections!!

The use of the High setting in the Firewall should only be used by advanced users. The High setting
blocks all connections both TO and FROM your computer. While it can provide extra security, its
configuration is significantly more complex as several Firewall Exceptions need to be created to allow all
network activities (e.g. browsing the Internet, receiving E Mail, etc.)
